Would Kanye West Designing For The Gap Change Fashion For The Worst?

Due to my informational and working vacation from the whole writing thing for the past week or so, I have definitely been off of the grid... AND IT HAS BEEN GREAT. But when I came back this morning and turned on my computer, I found freshly-minted information speaking of rumors about Kanye West possibly designing for the Gap. Granted, if you have been following Yeezy news in the same fashion that I unwittingly subscribe to from time to time, this may come as no surprise. With West already interning at the offices, it only seems like a hop, skip and a jump before he would get a full-blown designing job.

Of course, nothing is confirmed yet and everything is hearsay. But still, the idea of a celebrity getting a potential line in less than a quarter of the time it would usually take, say, a regular person may be disconcerting. It only gets worse when one thinks about the influx of celebrity lines post-Russ, Puff and Jay that have gradually decreased with quality over the years.

On the other hand, the idea that most celebrities shouldn't design is oft-ignored and it has been to the benefit of Mr. West that he has been blessed with a relatively strong palette for aesthetics. But I can't help but wonder something: Despite Kanye's talents as a writer, rapper, producer, and well, designer, does his involvement with what could very well be two major brands for product lines ruin the sanctity of fashion? Not so much in that West is the one to ruin it, because contrary to some opinions on NY Magazine's website I believe he enhances it somewhat, but rather that it opens the door for more fashion lines granted less so on the premise of talent and more so on the threshold of gimmick or celebrity.
